Certificates

INTRODUCTION

A diamond certificate is a professional way of examination to authenticate a diamond's attributes. The carat weight, colour and clarity are all validated, together with the diamond's exact measurements. Certificates are essential in determining or testifying a diamond's value. Diamonds sold through Fashion Jewelry have been graded by GIA, HRD or IGI. It is generally accepted by diamond industry professionals that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) sets the standard when it comes to diamond grading.

WHY DO I NEED A CERTIFICATE?

Shopping for certified diamonds allows you to make an informed and clever choice about your diamond selections. The advantages of buying a diamond with a GIA, HRD or IGI certificates are:

  1. Every important factor you need to know about the diamond is described in the certificate. This way you will know exactly what you are buying.

  2. If a diamond comes with a GIA,HRD or IGI certificate, you do NOT have to worry about the possibility that you might be purchasing a fracture-filled diamond. These are diamonds that have surface cracks that can be artificially filled to appear as much better diamonds than they actually are. These are in essence, very low quality diamonds that look great to naked eyes. GIA,HRD or IGI does not certificate these diamonds.

  3. If a diamond comes with a GIA,HRD or IGI certificate, you will NOT become a victim of buying a synthetic diamond. Currently, average jewelers have no way of telling if a diamond is natural or man-made.

  4. Purchasing a GIA,HRD or IGI certified diamond will simply provide you with much more confidence and value.

BEWARE:

Always buy a certificated diamond - unless you are purchasing jewelry set with diamonds smaller than 0.30ct. If your diamond is not graded by one of the 3 internationally recognised certificates listed above, chances are the grading stated is misleading and that you are purchasing something of less quality than indicated. Unfortunately some retail shops and online stores self certify, for the sole purpose of increasing their margin on the product sold.

If a jewelry store offers to sell you a loose diamond without a certificate, keep in mind that it means you are buying the diamond based only on the salesperson's claim about its quality, and that a trained gemologist or even other jewelers may disagree with the salesperson's assessment. This way you will not know whether you are buying a natural diamond or a treated one. At Fashion Jewelry we can guarantee you all diamonds are certified from one of the 3 internationally recognised institutes above.
